DECEMBER 2022 – SOUTH AFRICA
27 DECEMBER PUBLIC HOLIDAY
It is important that employers note the following:
Additional public holiday declared for 2022
President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared 27 December 2022 a public holiday throughout the Republic of South Africa. This is in lieu of Christmas day falling on a Sunday.
Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, 1994 refers – whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday will be a public holiday. However, this year the Monday following 25 December 2022 is another public holiday, being 26 December 2022, Day of Goodwill. This has resulted in the two public holidays overlapping.
The declaration of 27 December as a public holiday will ensure that workers are not unduly disadvantaged because of this unusual event and are still entitled to their 12 paid public holidays.
