NEW LABOUR LAW AND SOCIAL PROTECTION LAW
It is important that employers note the following:Labour Law – Royal Decree No. 53 of 2023
The former Royal Decree 35/2023 was repealed by the Oman Sultani through Decree No. 53 of 2023, which established a new employment law.

The new law was published in July 2023, but employers were given a grace period until 31 January 2024 to adapt their employment policies and practices to ensure compliance.

Among other things, the law increases employer-paid sick leave and maternity leave and introduces new employer-paid paternity leave.

Social Protection Law – Royal Decree No. 52 of 2023
The Social Protection Law, established by Royal Decree No. 52/2023, brings significant modifications to Oman’s social security system. These include extending certain benefits (like maternity leave and work injury coverage) to foreign employees and restructuring the retirement benefits currently provided to Omani workers in order to improve the system’s sustainability.
