MAY 2024 – JORDAN and LEBANON
MINIMUM WAGE AND SOCIAL SECURITY CHANGES
It is important that employers note the following:

JORDAN
Social security contribution ceiling

The Jordanian Social Security Corporation has announced an increase in the maximum monthly salary subject to the social security contribution calculation and the monthly maximum unemployment allowance for the year 2024.

The social security package in Jordan covers old age, disability and death, work injury, maternity and unemployment. The social security rate is made up of a 14.25% employer contribution and a 7.5% employee contribution and is divided as follows:

Effective 1 May 2024, the maximum salary ceiling on monthly social security contributions has been increased from 3,538 JOD (Jordanian dinars) to 3,612 JOD for employees who joined the social security fund on or after 1 May 2010.

There is no change for employees who joined the social security fund prior to 1 May 2010.

In addition, the unemployment allowance has increased from JOD 591 to JOD 600.

LEBANON
Increase in the minimum wage and social security maternity and sickness contribution ceiling

The Lebanese government issued Decree No. 13164 on 18 April 2024 related to the new minimum wage.

Effective 1 April 2024, the minimum wage is as follows:

·        LBP 18,000,000 per month (previously LBP 9,000,000);

·        LBP 820,000 for daily workers (previously LBP 410,000).

Following the increase of the minimum wage, the National Social Security (NSSF) has issued memorandum no. 754 dated 24 April 2024, effecting an increase in the maximum salary subject to NSSF maternity and sickness contributions.

Effective 1 April 2024, the annual NSSF ceiling for sickness and maternity contributions increased to LBP 90,000,000 per month (five times the minimum wage).

Previously, the ceilings were:

·        LBP 18,000,000 for the period 1 January 2024 to 29 February 2024.

·        LBP 45,000,000 for the period 1 March 2024 to 31 March 2024.

These changes have resulted in the following monthly contribution ceiling amounts for employees and employers:
