SEPTEMBER 2024 – KENYA
SOCIAL HEALTH INSURANCE FUND (SHIF) TO BE LAUNCHED
It is important that employers note the following:
Kenya to officially launch the Social Health Authority (SHA)
On 20 September 2024 the Court of Appeal issued stay orders permitting the Ministry of Health to move forward with the nationwide implementation of the Social Health Authority (SHA), which will replace the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
Effective 1 October 2024, the NHIF will transition to the SHA. Consequently, every Kenyan citizen, including their dependents, is legally required to register as a member of the SHA.
As a result, the Ministry of Health has published a public notice to all employers to provide essential information regarding the transition, payment deadlines and the use of the SHA employer portal. The public notice also lists the main features of the portal.
It is important to note that payments received on or before 9 October 2024 will be credited to the NHIF, while payments received from 9 November 2024 onwards will be credited to the SHA.
