DECEMBER 2024 – ZIMBABWE
ZIMBABWEAN EXEMPTION PERMITS
It is important that employers note the following:
Extension of validity of Zimbabwean exemption permits
On 28 November 2024, South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, announced a 12-month extension of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEP), which were set to expire on 29 November 2024. This extension, lasting until 28 November 2025, is in response to a High Court ruling that requires the Minister to consult with affected parties regarding the future of the ZEP scheme.
During this extension period, several key provisions apply:
- ZEP holders cannot be arrested, ordered to depart or detained for deportation.
- ZEP holders are permitted to enter and exit South Africa under the Immigration Act.
- ZEP holders will not need to provide a valid exemption certificate, visa or authorisation letter when applying for any visa to temporarily stay in South Africa.
This move allows ZEP holders to continue residing and working in South Africa until 28 November 2025, offering reassurance and stability for those affected.
As confirmation of the extension, Notice No. 5603 was published on 29 November 2024 in Government Gazette No. 51696.
