Tax System and Regulations

Income Tax Structure

The Kingdom of Bahrain offers one of the most tax-friendly environments in the Gulf. With no personal income tax, no capital gains tax and no withholding tax on dividends, interest or royalties, it is an attractive destination for businesses and individuals seeking to optimise their tax obligations. Except for specific sectors such as oil and gas, most companies are not subject to corporate income tax. However, VAT and social insurance contributions may apply, and should be factored into any tax strategy.

Wage Protection System

The Wage Protection System (WPS) in Bahrain is a regulatory framework established to ensure the timely and full payment of wages to employees in the private sector. It is a mandatory system introduced by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) in collaboration with the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) and the Ministry of Labour. WPS has evolved into a mandatory system for all private sector employers effective from January 2026, requiring employers to process salary payments through the official LMRA electronic platform.

Employers are required to submit monthly payroll files through the Expatriate Management System (EMS), and all wage payments must be routed through approved financial institutions. Non-compliance may result in penalties and restrictions on LMRA services.

Employer Contributions

Even though Bahrain offers a highly attractive business environment with no personal income tax, no capital gains tax and minimal employer tax burdens, employers are still required to comply with specific statutory contribution obligations, primarily related to social insurance, work injury coverage and end-of-service benefits. These contributions vary depending on the employee’s nationality and are administered through the Social Insurance Organization (SIO).
Bahraini nationals typically contribute around 8% as employees, while employers contribute approximately 18% toward pension, unemployment and insurance benefits. Expatriate employees are generally subject to lower contributions, with employee contributions of around 1-3% and employer contributions of approximately 3%, primarily covering workplace injury insurance.
Understanding these requirements is essential for maintaining compliance, budgeting employment costs accurately, and ensuring smooth payroll operations in the kingdom.

Documentation and Record-keeping

Employers operating in Bahrain are legally required to maintain accurate and comprehensive employment records in line with the country’s labour law and regulatory standards. This includes retaining documents such as employment contracts, payroll records, attendance logs, leave records and termination documents. Most records must be kept for a minimum of five years after the end of employment. Proper documentation is critical, not only for compliance with inspections by authorities such as the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) and Social Insurance Organisation (SIO), but also for resolving potential disputes and supporting audit readiness. Employers must also ensure that employee data is managed in compliance with Bahrain’s Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL).
